OverviewFETC: Hospitality Reception (SAQA ID 64469)

This qualification has been developed for the reception function within the accommodation industry. It brings together all aspects of front office and supervision. This qualification will professionalise the industry and is applicable to all sectors, from small bed and breakfasts to large-scale hotels. 

This qualification consists out of 35 modules and it is presented over a minimum period of 12 months. This is a credit-bearing course.  

Available for both On-Campus or Blended Mode (NEW) (online with some contact time on campus).  Practical work experience will be conducted at a pre-agreed upon host employer.  Students cannot choose where to do workplace practicals.  Note that students will not receive any compensation from the host employer - the purpose is work experience and not employment.

Maximum age: 25

Grade 12:

Compulsory or equivalent vocational training.  Current Grade 12 (or equivalent vocational learners) can apply with their latest school progress report.



Passed two on grade 12 senior (matric) certificate level (or equivalent) - not less than 50%. 

One of which must be English.

Mathematics / Mathematical literacy:

Passed on grade 12 senior (matric) certificate level - not less than 50%.

If not passed with 50% or more, learners will be charged R300 for the required mathematics modules to be taught.  Bursaries and learnerships do not cover the mathematics modules.



Only South African citizens.


* Please note that we do not provide NSFAS as we are not a public university.

* An R80.00 non-negotiable fine is payable for every assignment that a student does not submit before its due date.  This rule applies to all students (including learnership and bursary students). Students will receive an invoice and, in case of students receiving stipends, the amount will be deducted from the stipends.  Students with outstanding accounts will not be able to graduate until defaults are paid in full.

* Graduation ceremonies are paid-for events.  We do charge for the rental of graduation attire.  Photographs are not included in the price of the graduation ceremony as not all students wish to purchase photos.  Photographs are not compulsory and attendees are welcome to take their own photos as well.

  • Deal with the Arrival of Customers

  The learner will be able to deal with the arrival of customers in a polite and professional manner in accordance with organisational    



  • Introduce new staff to the workplace

  This module helps new employees feel welcome and assist them in becoming productive as quickly as possible. 


  • Maintain a secure working environment

  Each learner must be able to identify and respond to factors, faults or damage which increase the security risk for staff and customers. The learner must be able to use all relevant technology and understand how maintaining a high standard of security impacts positively on revenue for the business. 

  • Operate a payment point and process payments

  Each learner must be able to prepare, operate a payment point and process payments efficiently as well as performing cashing up and hand over procedures.  Learners must also have a good understanding of customer service.


  • Provide Customer Information and Book External Services

  The learner will be able to provide guests with accurate information regarding services and be able to book these according to organisational



  • Contribute to the identification of short term supply needs

  The learner must be able to identify the required stock levels, implement an effective reporting and recording procedure. The learner will

  understand the impact of adhering to current legislation and regulations as well as outline the impact of inadequate supplies on customer


  • Develop self within the job role

  Each learner must be able to analyse their own strengths and weaknesses, set objectives for self-development and implement a development plan in order to achieve these objectives. Learners must also be able to monitor own activities and approach colleagues and management for feedback. 


  • Exchange Foreign Cash and Travellers Cheques

  The learner will be able to recognise, calculate and exchange foreign cash and traveler's cheques. The learner must understand the importance of accuracy when exchanging money. 


  • Maintain a preventative maintainance programme

  A learner must ensure that the operation can continue, by maintaining cleanliness and functionality of the work area and equipment while minimising the risk of accidents. 


  • Maintain the cleaning programme for own area of responsibility

  The learner must be able to develop and consistently maintain an effective cleaning programme for his/ her area to ensure the safety of staff and customers. This includes identifying potential chemical hazards, frequent safety checks and on-job training which is recorded and filed as well as adherence to legislative requirements. 


  • Maintain the receipt, storage and issue of goods

  The learner must at all times ensure that security procedures and hygiene standards are complied with when receiving, storing and issuing goods in the workplace. This includes completion of relevant documentation, analysis of physical versus planned performance and the understanding of the legislation and practices involved. 


  • Manage one`s own development

  The learner will be able to identify the skills and areas of development appropriate to his/her current and future position. This includes understanding the importance of a development plan with realistic, specific and measurable objectives relevant to him/her and in line with the organisation`s requirements, also stating review dates and realistic deadlines. 


  • Monitor customer satisfaction

  The learner must at all times ensure that the satisfaction of customers is maintained through effective communication. This includes all aspects of customer care especially dealing with complaints and requests. 


  • Plan and conduct meetings

  Each learner must be able to plan meetings, draw up agendas, conduct meetings and prepare minutes. Learners must be able to carry tasks from meetings into work schedules and be prepared to chair meetings of various types. 


  • Source information about self-employment opportunities

  Each learner must be able to identify and evaluate the different sources of information that will assist them in making the best decisions regarding self-employment opportunities. 


  • Co-ordinate the Greeting and Assisting of Guests on Arrival and Departure

  The learner will be able to co-ordinate and assist guests on arrival and on departure by checking the number of arrivals and departures for the day, allocation of duties to other departments and assisting with additional services if required. 


  • Conduct on-the-job coaching

  The learner should be able to develop others on the job, in a way that contributes to the overall effectiveness of the organisation. It is vitally important to share as much knowledge and experience as possible for the long-term benefit of the industry. 


  • Control and order stock 

  The learner will understand the importance of all aspects of ordering and controlling stock in line with organisations requirements. This includes identifying and maintaining acceptable stock levels and losses, recording the correct documents and reporting to the appropriate person. 


  • Maintain the Portering/ Concierge Service

  The learner must understand the role that porters play in enhancing the image of the organisation as the porter creates the first impression for the customer. 

  • Monitor and maintain health, safety, and security 

  The well-being of staff and customers must be maintained at all times. This includes the monitoring of emergency procedures, safety and security and consulting with specialists where development is needed. 


  • Plan, organise and monitor work in own area of responsibility

  Learners should be aware of the activities in their areas of responsibility and should coordinate the efforts of all staff so as to maximise productivity and job satisfaction of employees. 


  • Accommodate audience and context needs in oral/signed communication

  Learners at this level are aware of their audiences and purposes for communication. They adapt their style and language register to the requirements of different situations. They are able to listen and speak/sign confidently in both formal and familiar settings. They can articulate their purposes and reasons for the adoption of a particular register and style in any situation. They can usually identify the assumptions and inferences implicit in what people say/sign and how they say/sign it. 

  • Interpret and use information from texts

  Learners at this level read and view a range of texts. People credited with this unit standard are able to read and view a variety of text types with understanding and to justify their views and responses by reference to detailed evidence from texts. They are also able to evaluate the effectiveness of different texts for different audiences and purposes by using a set of criteria for analysis. 


  • Use language and communication in occupational learning programmes

  The purpose of this unit standard is to facilitate learning and to ensure that learners are able to cope with learning in the context of learnerships, skills programmes, and other learning programmes. Many adult learners in the FET band have not been in a learning situation for a long time, and need learning and study strategies and skills to enable successful progression. 


  • Write/present/sign texts for a range of communicative contexts

  Learners at this level write/present/sign texts with the complex subject matter and a need for various levels of formality in language and construction. They select text type, subject matter, and language to suit specific audiences, purposes, and contexts. Writers/signers can use linguistic structures and features to influence readers/their audience. They draft, redraft and edit own writing/signing to meet the demands of a

  range of text-types. They use language appropriate to the socio-cultural, learning or workplace/technical environment as required. They explore presentation techniques as an alternative to writing/signing own texts. 


  • Apply knowledge of statistics and probability to critically interrogate and effectively communicate findings on life-related problems

  This Unit Standard is designed to provide credits towards the mathematical literacy requirement of the NQF at Level 4. The essential purposes

  of the mathematical literacy requirement are that, as the learner progresses with confidence through the levels, the learner will grow in: 


  • Engage in sustained oral/signed communication and evaluate spoken/signed texts

  This module will enable learners to participate effectively in oral/signed communication in most situations. 


  • Read/view, analyse and respond to a variety of texts

  Competence at this level will enable learners to use analytical skills to make sophisticated judgments about complex human and social issues.

  They are aware of both the functions of language and of its drama and power. 


  • Represent analyse and calculate shape and motion in 2-and 3-dimensional space in different contexts 

  This unit standard is designed to provide credits towards the mathematical literacy requirements of the NQF at level 4. The essential purposes

  of the mathematical literacy requirements are that, as the learner progresses with confidence through the levels, the learner will grow in: 

Insightful use of mathematics in the management of the needs of everyday living to become a self-managing person.

An understanding of mathematical applications that provides insight into the learner`s present and future occupational experiences and so develop into a contributing worker.

The ability to voice a critical sensitivity to the role of mathematics in a democratic society and so become a participating citizen. 

  • Use language and communication in occupational learning programmes

  Learners competent at this level will be able to deal with learning materials, to access and use useful resources, to seek clarification and help when necessary, and apply a range of learning strategies. They do this with an understanding of the features and processes of the workplace and occupations to which their learning programmes refer. 


  • Use mathematics to investigate and monitor the financial aspects of personal, business, national and international issues 

  Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:

Use mathematics to plan and control financial instruments including insurance and assurance, unit trusts, stock exchange dealings, options, futures and bonds

Use simple and compound interest to make sense of and define a variety of situations including mortgage loans, hire purchase, present values, annuities and sinking funds

Investigate various aspects of costs and revenue including marginal costs, marginal revenue, and optimisation of profit

Use mathematics to debate aspects of the national and global economy, including tax, productivity and the equitable distribution of resources. 

  • Write/present/sign for a wide range of contexts

  This unit standard will be useful to learners who communicate confidently and fluently in writing/signing in almost any formal and informal situation. Competence at this level will help learners to analyse and make mature judgments about complex, human, personal, social and environmental issues and to express and motivate own opinions. 


  • Handle and record refunds

  Each learner must be able to deal with customers and process refunds where necessary thereby understanding the importance of maintaining good customer relations and thus continued business with the customer. 


  • Maintain a Booking System

  The learner will be able to maintain, determine, record and confirm bookings on a manual and computer system.

  • Provide a valet/butler service 

  The learner will be able to provide a butler service to the guests according to the organisational requirements.
